The Two Cabos. Which One is Right for You?
I‘d heard of Cabo and seen people’s Cabo pictures for years before I decided to go. At the time of that decision, I didn’t realize that the word Cabo is often used to refer to two different places until I started researching for my own trip. What I learned is that Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo are similar, close in proximity, but also have significant differences that are worth knowing and considering when deciding which Cabo is right for you.
Los Cabos is the region at the southern tip of Baja California Sur, Mexico and refers to the two Cabos: Cabo San Lucas (often called just Cabo) and San José del Cabo. The Los Cabos International Airport is located in San José del Cabo and is about 35 minutes from Cabo San Lucas.
San José del Cabo is a quaint, traditional Mexican town with architecture reflecting the Spanish colonial era. There are lots of family owned restaurants, art galleries, and cute boutiques for shopping. The town is easily navigable by foot or car. We walked from our hotel to downtown and took a taxi back after dinner. (The walk was a commitment but definitely doable and a nice way to see the town.) The people are really friendly, and the town felt quite safe to me. San José is the destination for you if you’re looking for a quieter, laid back vacation focused on culture, ease and relaxation. One important note is that the water in San José del Cabo is rough, can be dangerous and is generally not considered safe for swimming.
Cabo San Lucas has the reputation of a party town and has lots of resorts and bars catering to late-night crowds. Cabo San Lucas is a denser town with more people and places within the town. The water in Cabo is generally safer and safe for swimming. Also, several tours and water activities are offered in Cabo San Lucas. Cabo is a better choice for those looking for a livelier vacation. If you’re interested in nightlife, socializing at local bars, and being on the water, then Cabo San Lucas is the destination for you.
Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo are only about a 20-minute drive apart, so you’ll definitely be able to experience both. I recommend staying in one place - the place that better suits your overall vacation needs - and taking a day trip to the other.
I hope this helps and happy traveling!
